Keep in mind, however, that it all depends on supply and demand.You may earn more in the Midwest and South since the need there is the greatest.” “It is nice to know that my arrival at a facility is always anticipated.” —John Richards McCormick, MD, FAAN ON THE ROAD “I was in private practice in the Southeast until I retired in 1998, practicing solo and also with partners throughout that time,” says John Richards McCormick, MD, FAAN, who has 34 years of experience in general neurology. “After retiring, I took a year and a half off, and then realized I missed neurology and did not want to become stagnant.” So, he contacted VISTA Staffing Solutions in Salt Lake City, Utah, and secured his first contract in November 1999 at a large hospital in the Northeast. “Thus far, I have provided services at about 10 different facilities, but I have returned to many of them on numerous occasions,” notes Dr. McCormick, who holds five state licenses.“My relationship with VISTA has been so satisfying that there has been no need to look elsewhere.” Currently, he is fulfilling an ongoing contract 5 miles from his home, providing inpatient care 2 to 3 weeks, and then taking off a couple weeks to a month. “I prefer 1- to 3-month contracts and enjoy small-town, rural medicine,” comments Dr. McCormick. “As a small-town boy who grew up in the country, being able to talk with patients is important.” His professional experiences as a locum tenens neurologist have run the gamut.“I have covered everything from small private practices in the Southeast, to multi-specialty clinics in the Northwest and Midwest, and hospital-affiliated multi-specialty groups in the Northeast,” recalls Dr. McCormick. “When helping out small private practices, I usually covered both the hospital and office, and handled 24/7 call. For larger specialty clinics, it was a rotating call schedule.
