The Northeast had more multiple sclerosis cases, as that condition tends to be more frequent in northern climates.” His time in the Northeast is particularly memorable. “I was initially there for 6 weeks, and then kept returning over the next 3 to 4 years,” explains Dr. McCormick. “I came to know the hospitals, doctors, and town quite well. My camping trailer was set up on the lake and it provided a really cool lifestyle. From church, to hiking, fishing, and motorcycle travel—it was just great. Plus, I met my fiancée during that time, which made it doubly special. I have been able to become part of the environment and make friends, whom I like to invite to my home in the Southeast.” Having completed numerous opportunities, Dr. McCormick knows the routine.“I am expected to seamlessly integrate into the schedule and provide whatever the facility needs,” he says. “In return, I expect to be treated with the respect and dignity that I plan to give when I walk in the door.” He advises, “If there is something you are not comfortable with, such as seeing a large number of patients, you can let the clinic supervisor know. I have found most facilities to be accommodating in that way.” That is just one of the perks that keeps Dr. McCormick satisfied with this career choice. “The best part is the chance to recapture a little bit of my own life,” he adds. “It gives me the opportunity to go and see places I have never been and meet people I never would have met.
