On the professional side, it is nice to know that my arrival at a facility is always anticipated. They value the fact that I am there, and that is why I went into medicine.” Dr. McCormick continues, “The technological aspect— learning all the various systems, recordkeeping, imaging, and dictation methods, as well as the scheduling procedures of each facility in a reasonable amount of time—can be challenging, but certain personal traits can make the experience easier.” He suggests, “You will be effective if you have an inquisitive nature and try to understand how things work where you are. Be open and flexible to how a facility operates. When you arrive, ask how you can help, and follow up on it. Also, be outgoing and introduce yourself. I employ these tactics, and when a facility tries to recruit me permanently, then I know I did a good job.” What is next for this locum tenens neurologist? “Serendipity has a lot to do with where I accept opportunities,” says Dr. McCormick. “For right now, I plan to continue with my ongoing local contract for as long as I am needed. Still, I would go back to the Northeast in a heartbeat, and I would love to go to New Zealand—but that will be later down the locum tenens road.” MEETING THE NEED “I was the chairman of neurology for a very large hospital system in the Southeast,” recounts Jeffrey Rosenfeld, PhD, MD, FAAN, a neurologist with 15 years of experience, who specializes in neuromuscular disease. “After that, while WORDS TO THE WISE ● Ask questions. ● Be open and flexible. ● Introduce yourself to staff. ● Take your time with patients. ● Engage colleagues in non-medical conversation. ● Notify the facility supervisor if you have any concerns. ● Give the best treatment possible, even if providing care outside your (sub)specialty.
