logy in between career moves and deciding on the next best situation, I opted for a locum tenens opportunity in an effort to stay busy and earn income.” Dr. Rosenfeld has since taken two opportunities, both in acute care hospitals in the Southeast. His first contract was a 4-day stint at the end of last year, and he is currently fulfilling his second opportunity, arranged by Locum Medical Group, located in Cleveland, Ohio. “I have been the only neurologist on staff during both contracts,” he explains, “handling a number of different types of conditions, including acute management of emergency situations to outpatient care of routine neurological conditions such as tremor, headaches, seizures, and dizziness. The first opportunity exclusively required inpatient responsibilities, and my current stint is a mixture of general neurology duties, although the majority of my time is spent in the outpatient office practice.” Dr. Rosenfeld adds, “I have been here 3 months and will probably extend on a month-tomonth basis.” What has he found to be the most challenging facets of locum tenens? The typical short-term relationship with patients is one. Another is the potential for providing a different diagnosis than that already given. “Neurologic illnesses are often chronic and managed over time,” notes Dr. Rosenfeld.“Patients want very much to entrust their care to someone on whom they can depend for long periods. By contrast, the nature of locum tenens is temporary. This disparity between the traditional role of a neurologist and the typical role of a locum tenens physician provides a unique challenge.” He continues, “I have also found that in some locations, such as rural settings with fewer resources for neurologic care, patients may be given inappropriate diagnoses. So, they come to you after having been told for many years that they have a certain condition, and now you may need to tell them otherwise.” Given these challenges, what are some ways to ensure that your opportunity goes smoothly?
