LocumLife - May 2008 - (Page 29) WHEN IN CHINLE, AZ AZ… Tour the canyon. The redstone Canyon de Chelly National Monument is home to several periods of Indian culture dating from 350 AD to 1300 AD. The 26-mile canyon’s sheer cliffs range from 30 to more than 1,000 feet. Visitors can see hundreds of Anasazi ruins, as well as modern Navajo homes and farms. A visitors’ center offers maps to all the sites, including Spider Rock, Canyon del Muerto, and White House Ruins. Fish the lake. Wheatfields Lake, one of the area’s most popular destinations for camping and picnics, also offers excellent trout fishing opportunities.Anglers can cast their line from a few feet off the road or launch a fishing boat near the base of the Chuska Mountains. Appreciate the art. The Hatathli Museum, located on the Diné College campus, houses a permanent collection of approximately 3,000 Native American artifacts, including pottery and textiles, native paintings and photographs, and documents and manuscripts. The museum also offers classes in traditional Navajo arts, and hosts annual functions, such as the Native American Music Festival Art Market,Art Shows, and a Christmas Bazaar. Step back in time. The Hubbell Trading Post, less than 40 miles south in Ganado, is the oldest, continuously operating trading post on the Navajo nation. Established by John Lorenzo Hubbell in 1876, this National Historic Site remained in the Hubbell family until 1965, when it was sold to the National Park Service. Today, the active post offers a variety of Native American-made crafts, including rugs, baskets, jewelry, drums, and pots. Visitors can also see demonstrations of Navajo rug weaving, tours of the Hubbell family home, and a small museum display. Circle Career Card No. 605 check out the popular restaurant and bar scene.
