News locum tenens physicians can use IN BRIEF… Pediatric specialists care for at-risk youngsters A recent study appearing in the Journal of Pediatrics reported that there are only 790 board-certified pediatric endocrinologists in the country to care for the 229,249 children suffering from diabetes. Additionally, 17,000 American children are obese, which puts them at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Exacerbating the situation is the disproportionate geographic distribution of these specialists. Physicians opting for part-time practice O Physicians support national healthcare plan Results of a survey published in the Annals of Internal Medicine indicated that 59% of physicians polled would back national health insurance (NHI) legislation, 32% would oppose it, and 9% are neutral. The strongest proponents of the measure included psychiatrists (83%), pediatric subspecialists (71%), emergency medicine physicians (69%), general pediatricians (65%), general internists (64%), and family physicians (60%). In a similar vein, a single-payer NHI program was approved by the American College of Physicians in December. ver the last 28 years, the American population has grown more than 33%, yet the amount of new physicians entering practice has remained constant, resulting in shortages. According to the 2007 Retention Survey, not only does the demand for physicians continue to exceed the amount of those in practice, an increasing number of physicians are opting to enter part-time service. Conducted by the American Medical Group Association (AMGA) and Cejka Search, the report indicates that physicians practicing on a part-time basis rose from 13% in 2005 to 19% in 2007, with the largest percentage found in the 35-39 age bracket. Of that age group, 15% of the male and 85% of the female physicians chose to work fewer hours. “Retirement and graduation rates tell only part of the story. Our survey took a closer look inside medical groups, and the result appears to be a rise in the number of physicians, among both genders, practicing part-time,” said Carol Westfall, president of Cejka Search. “When recruiting to retain young physicians, organizations need to be aware that these candidates place significant weight on their ability to balance time in practice with other interests and commitments. As physicians approach retirement, they also are looking for ways to achieve balance.” As many mobile professionals can attest, it is the ability to maintain a balanced lifestyle that makes part-time practice so attractive. Over two-thirds of female doctors (69%) and 11% of their male colleagues claim “family responsibilities” as the reason. In contrast, male physicians said “unrelated professional or personal pursuits” (31%) and “preparing for retirement” (29%) were the main impetus for working fewer hours. Some retention strategies that have proved successful include the use of hosptialist services (86%) as well as those of physician assistants and nurse practitioners (79%). Furthermore, 95% believed that mentoring promotes retention, with 56% having assigned a mentor to newly recruited physicians. To view the entire survey, visit http://www.cejkasearch.com.
