Geographical preference is an important factor in selecting a full-time position, according to the vast percentage of respondents. Seven out of ten residents plan on limiting their search to particular geographical areas. Their choice may relate to family concerns, such as relocating closer to aging parents. One-fifth indicates that it depends on the specific permanent placement. Eight percent are open to any geographical location. The size of the hospital or medical practice is critical to 77% of residents. However, 18% note that it is not very important, and 5% percent of participants say size is not an important factor at all. Physician recruiters (in-house or agency) have long known how crucial it is to present a practice opportunity that meets the expectations of serious candidates. According to 45% of respondents, quality of life is the single most important criterion when weighing permanent employment options. Their second greatest factor is practice location (24%). Other important criteria are long-term earning potential (7%), immediate income (6%), and advancement potential (5%). Physician recruiters also understand the critical importance of gathering input from a candidate’s spouse or significant other during the placement process. Sixty-eight percent of participating residents consider it extremely important to consider their input, and 13% regard the matter as somewhat important. Virtually three out of ten respondents maintain that it would be very important for this to take place, with another 29% considering it to be somewhat important. OTHER EXPECTATIONS Physicians who have spent 8 or more years completing their medical education and training expect to be well compensated as practitioners in their field. Nearly three-fifths of the respondents expect to receive an initial salary between $150,000 and $250,000.
