LocumLife - May 2008 - (Page 8) INSIGHTS Survey Says different medical specialties, as well as the clinical skills and procedure modalities required of the doctors who join a given practice. The breakdown of initial compensation expectations: Under $150K $150 – 200K $200 – 250K $250 – 300K Over $300K 20% 41% 18% 12% 9% Responses regarding job tenure also proved to be insightful. Considering actual contractual stipulations, participants were asked how long they expect to stay in their first full-time position. Eighteen percent indicated 1 to 2 years, 20% mentioned 3 to 4 years, and 28% specified longer than 4 years. Over one-third (34%) could not predict how long they would stay employed at their first practice. WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED Several important conclusions can be drawn from this survey. To begin with, a significant number of residents are highly motivated to become board-certified as soon as possible and perhaps even extend their clinical training in order to become sub-specialists in their fields. Those who are set on starting a full-time practice right away have definite career expectations. For the most part, they have limited their geographical preferences to specific areas. Doctors who feel comfortable with the size of the hospital or medical group—and with immediate compensation and long-term income potential—expect to be committed to their employers for a reasonable length of time. Respondents believe input from spouses or significant others who play an important part in the decision-making process is essential. Quality-of-life issues also are extremely important to residents evaluating permanent and temporary career paths. In fact, a number of new physicians are seriously considering locum tenens as a viable practice option, especially as a means of investigating permanent opportunities. For those drawn to the locum tenens lifestyle, seeking assistance from reputable locum tenens firms will be a top priority. With slightly over half of the respondents not aware of this practice alternative, it seems that locum tenens agencies can benefit from greater emphasis on educating residents about “the locum tenens lifestyle” as a career option.
