patients that one might not even have in rural settings in the United States.” According to Ms. Brittell, the great thing about being in this isolated community is that if you are interested in learning something about other disciplines, there is enough downtime for your colleagues to train you. “As a PA, I have been crosstrained in both lab and x-ray procedures. I was even the pseudo-dentist during one winter season—having spent the previous summer training with the dentist. Also, I have learned how to use ultrasonography and have worked with the physical therapist. Gaining these experiences is more than just professional development. It is vital. In the event something happens to one of the other healthcare professionals, someone has to step in and operate the equipment.” Another interesting aspect to practicing in Antarctica is the “walking blood bank.” Everyone’s blood is typed before they arrive, so if there is a critical situation, all the other residents with that same type can be called in to donate blood if necessary. “We have had to do that at least once during my tenure.
