MOON over the Royal Society Range, Antarctica. donor who comes in at a moment’s notice to save the life of another,” claims Ms. Brittell. “Also, everyone is medically prescreened before they are cleared to work in Antarctica, which filters out quite a few candidates who could become complicated patients.” In addition to the scientists and healthcare providers, there is an entire support staff at the station. People are working with large equipment and driving snowmobiles around crevasses, so there are all kinds of dangers in the environment, not to mention the cold injury risk. “We work together to keep ourselves alive and safe,” stresses Ms. Brittell.“Everyone is essential to helping the community survive.” A DIFFERENT KIND OF LIFESTYLE Though the staff at McMurdo works 6 days a week with Sundays off, there is still plenty of free time for fun activities. Believe it or not, they can go outside every single day. As members of the community, they are supplied with extreme cold weather gear that is good enough to wear outside in any kind of weather. Once outdoors, they can hike on trails around the community or cross-country ski. However, it is very regimented to where and when the team can go for safety purposes. “For example, we will be called in if the wind chill hits -100°F,” says Ms. Brittell. “Also, there are safety mechanisms in place to prevent anyone from being blown away in a storm. “Inside, there is a smoker’s bar and a wine/coffee bar with a movie projector, so we often sit on couches and watch movies. To keep fit, there are two gyms: One has weights and the other has been nicknamed the ‘gerbil’ gym because it houses treadmills. There is a band room for those who like music—and there are some very wonderful musicians living at the station. We even can rent instruments if we want. There is also a radio station where anyone can learn how to be a DJ.
