When asked what value they brought to a medical facility, they were in close agreement with administrators and managers. Almost all respondents (90%) cited maintaining patient care as a major factor, followed by preventing staff burnout (52%). Forty-six percent indicated that they help facilities to generate revenue and 39% noted that they add a clinical skill. Over the last 30 years, locum tenens has become an integral part of the medical landscape. A large majority of physicians and non-physician providers responding felt the same, with 92% reporting that they were accepted by staff physicians at their temporary engagements. Ninety-five percent stated patients accepted their temporary care, and 91% indicated that administrators accepted them. As the numbers indicate, many facilities are utilizing locum tenens practitioners to maintain services and revenue until they can recruit the full-time, permanent physicians they need. While facilities still use locum tenens physicians to fill in for vacationing physicians or those on CME, the primary function of locum tenens doctors today is to hold a place until new staff can be brought on board. Rather than using the services of locum tenens physicians on an ad hoc basis to fill in when an occasional need arises, many facilities are featuring locum tenens physicians as an established part of the physician staffing mix.
