LocumLife - July 2008 - (Page 7) LocumLife THE MAGAZINE DEDICATED TO LOCUM TENENS PHYSICIANS Editorial Advisory Boards Responses to an open-ended question regarding physicians’ thoughts and perceptions of rural medicine reveal a prevalent concern about the quality of education and the availability of other kinds of enrichment activities for their children. In addition to a number of responses about the lack of dining, travel, and entertainment options, physicians expressed professional concerns about access to specialty care, medical technology, and patient support services in rural America; about the need to be more of a generalist than they were in order to succeed financially; and about whether patient care standards would be stringent enough. Outside of lifestyle and general practice concerns, most respondents to the 2007 Practicing Medicine in Rural America survey believe that the pace of rural healthcare is slower (59%), and that their relationships with patients are better than (51%), or at least the same as (46%) they are in urban or suburban practice. Their answers were more evenly split on other aspects of medical practice. PROFITABILITY OF RURAL MEDICINE Among physicians who have experienced rural medicine, more than half of respondents thought the profitability of rural practice is either the same as (35%) or more profitable than (23%) urban or suburban practice. Although more than a quarter (28%) of respondents thought rural medicine was less profitable, another 14% thought the greater purchasing power in rural areas compensated for the lower profitability of rural practice. Physician respondents with no rural practice experience were almost evenly split on this issue, with 53% indicating that rural practice is generally more profitable than urban or suburban practice and 47% saying rural practice is less profitable. Only 16% of respondents with rural healthcare experience said that practicing rural medicine was more frustrating than practicing medicine in a more metropolitan setting. In fact, almost half of respondents (47%) said the frustration factor was about the same in both practice settings, while more than a third (37%) said rural medicine is less frustrating than urban or suburban practice. Among physicians with no rural practice experience, 43% believed that rural and urban physicians are equally frustrated while 42% thought rural physicians are less frustrated. Only 15% said they thought rural physicians are more frustrated with medical practice. For the growing number of physicians to whom “enjoying the journey” is more important than “succeeding” in the rat race, practicing medicine in rural America probably is worth at least a try. For physicians who prefer urban or suburban living, though they may prefer practicing medicine in a rural community, the locum tenens alternative offers a win-win solution. And it allows physicians greater freedom to practice medicine on their own terms. » www.LocumLife.com In their roles, EAB members communicate with our editorial staff as schedules permit, submitting story ideas and/or manuscripts, offering perspectives on a variety of topics, and agreeing to be interviewed for articles.
