Fortunately, locum tenens professionals have more flexibility. Still, you need to be aware of changes in air travel that could affect you, wherever you roam. These days, airlines are also becoming very creative in cutting costs to avoid bankruptcy or, worse yet, extinction. Some are following JetBlue’s and Southwest’s lead and flying slower to save money and fuel. Plans to lay off or buy out a slew of pilots and other workers (at United, Continental, American, and Delta) have made headlines, while new policies that pass additional costs along to passengers are not always that well known. Recently, more airlines have joined the fray, with some already charging travelers to fly stand-by or “READ THE FINE planning fuel surcharges for presumably “free” tickPRINT about applicable ets. In June, the idea of weighing passengers like fees and regulations on air freight to determine total fares with or without carriers’ own sites before baggage was even bandied about. Look for new buying tickets.” policies and charges for previously complimentary services—from checked bags and carry-ons, to preferred seating and blankets and pillows, to food and beverages, including water. This “a la carte” pricing also affects how you arrange your travel—some airlines will penalize you up to $25 per domestic reservation made by phone versus online. During testimony on Capitol Hill on June 26, the CEO of the Travel Industry Association presented survey findings estimating that frustrated air travelers avoided 41 million trips since last May, representing a $26 billion loss in consumer spending, including $9.4 billion in airline revenues, $5.6 billion in hotel receipts, and $3.1 billion in restaurant income. Other industry insiders anticipate flights at domestic airports this fall to be down 9% from last November as carriers eliminate available seats by reducing plane size or cutting flights entirely. The top five larger airports expected to be hit hardest are Honolulu, Hawaii (-27%), Oakland, California (-24.4%), Cincinnati, Ohio (-24.1%), Kansas City, Missouri (-18.9%), and Chicago, Illinois (Midway) (-16.7%). Given the push to stimulate the economy, you could see even better deals from airlines, hotels, and rental car agencies when it comes time to take a break between contracts.
