LocumLife - August 2008 - (Page 11) THE BENEFITS… ● Ability to test drive a practice setting ● Experience new locations ● Transition to real world medicine with relative ease and no long-term commitments ● Enjoy hassle-free travel and licensing with help from staffing agency ● Have the flexibility to take longer vacations between engagements visit with friends and family whenever I want, and it has been absolutely wonderful.” Although she contemplated permanently locating to this rural town, Dr. Donaugh eventually decided to move on to another opportunity. In July, she began her second locum tenens engagement through the agency. “The 3-month contract is located at a government clinic on a U.S. Air Force base in the Southwest,” she describes. “My shift at the family practice facility runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.” With a full year of locum tenens practice under her belt, what can Dr. Donaugh say about the challenges that she faced as a new doctor? “Everything has run very smoothly. My company has been absolutely wonderful about helping me complete any of the requirements I have needed before I start an opportunity. And the facilities basically have gone beyond expectations and have been so supportive. For instance, when I needed my state license, everybody banded together to rush the paperwork through.” Ultimately, Dr. Donaugh believes that flexibility is key when it comes to successful locum tenens practice. “You need a personality that can get along with different types of people. Being able to adapt to different situations that arise is also very helpful.” For those just out of residency, she advises, “If you want to practice immediately, you should start preparing for locum tenens practice early in your last year of residency. It is an excellent way to start your medical career because you get to sample different areas. If you are looking for a place to settle, locum tenens provides the opportunity to test out different types of practice environments.” Dr. Donaugh adds, “Physicians interested in travel will find temporary placement the perfect option. With the staffing agencies taking care of all your travel arrangements and accommodations, everything is hassle-free. I highly recommend it.” LL Amy Sutton is a freelance writer based in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Circle Career Card No. 601 AUGUST 2008 LocumLife 11 http://locumtenens.comphealth.com
