Another thing to think about is whether you would like to go back to previous locations on rotation. Of my contracts, 90% are recurring. Robert Stevenson, MD (RS): I prefer smaller hospital-based practices, but I have accepted contracts in private offices, imaging centers, and clinics, as well. Because training staff is something I enjoy, I choose opportunities where I can run a department and do my part to improve conditions. My contract choice also has a lot to do with the licenses I hold. In some cases, if I want to experience a particular region, I will get a license in anticipation of working there. Which issues need to be considered when negotiating locum tenens contracts? RS: Staffing companies and clients want everything to be mutually satisfactory so they may be willing to negotiate. Just be sure any requests are written into your agreement early. Most contracts, however, are straightforward—they boil down to caseload and compensation. I like to know the patient load and requirements for being on call upfront. Always get information on other expectations so you can see if the opportunity matches your needs and skill level, or if you may need time for a refresher. KS: The key to negotiation is to never be afraid of asking for more than you want because you just might get it. Invest in your marketability, with certifications and additional training, and do not sell yourself short. You have to plan for your time off just as carefully as you do for your shift requirements. —Robert Stevenson, MD GH: Probably the most important clause to be aware of is the non-compete rule. Basically, you are bound to accept matches through whichever staffing company first presented your CV each time you return to a facility during a 2-year period. If you allow your CV to be presented through multiple agencies, you may easily lose track, which is why I recommend limiting the number of agencies with which you register. CS: I also would advise that you work with established locum tenens firms with reputations of integrity and service. The National Association of Locum Tenens Organizations (nalto.org) is a good resource. Secondly, I would make sure the agency’s malpractice policy is through a high-rated insurer and provides adequate coverage. How can locum tenens professionals more easily transition into new practice settings and communities? CS: Rely on locum tenens staffing organizations to ensure that you have adequate communication with clients so you understand their expectations.
