DESTINATIONS Passport damp November through December, when most flooding occurs. SQUARE ONE St. Mark’s Square is a great place to begin any visit. It is alive with shops, cafes—most notably Quadri and Florian’s—street performers, tourists and countless pigeons. A whole day can be filled with major attractions like the Basilica di San Marco (St. Mark’s Basilica) and Palazzo Ducale di Venezia (a.k.a., the Doge’s Palace), as well as St. Mark’s Campanile, Scuola Grande di San Marco, and Museo Correr. Many of the winding paths that lead in and out of St. Mark’s are full of tourist shops where you can purchase Carnevale masks, Murano glass, and other trinkets. After a day of sightseeing, a famed, but pricey, place to have a drink is Harry’s Bar on the Grand Canal—just across the bridge from San Marco Vallaresso. Sitting on the Grand Canal next to St. Mark’s is the Doge’s Palace. Leader of the Venetians, the first of Venice’s 118 doges was elected in 697. The palace, which was largely constructed from 1309 to 1424, is a striking gothic masterpiece that is now a museum. Of particular interest are paintings by Tintoretto and Veronese, the Porta della Carta, the Giants’ Staircase, the Sala del Maggior Consiglio, and the Bridge of Sighs, which connects the palace to the prison. A fine view of the lagoon can be had from the loggia. Adjacent and connected to the Doge’s Palace, St. Mark’s Basilica blends many influences to create one of the most hauntingly beautiful cathedrals in Europe. The layout is based on a Greek cross, and this is the third church to stand at the site. Prepare for a neck ache when you are done touring the structure, as a good part of your time will be spent looking up in wonder at the many works of art that adorn the five domes and the upper walls. Be sure not to miss the altar with St. Mark’s remains, the treasury, the Madonna di Nicopeia, the pala d’oro, the Museo Marciano, and the Pentecost and Ascension Domes. CITY OF CULTURE Like most of Europe, Venice does not lack beautiful churches; the problem becomes how to find the time to see them all—or at least the most notable. Across the Grand Canal from St. Mark’s, Santa Maria della Salute is one that should not be missed.
