LocumLife - September 2008 - (Page 22) Getting Oriented Prior to her arrival, her staffing agency took steps to ensure that she was properly trained for the task ahead. “I did not have any paramedic experience,” notes Dr. McGuire, “so Raytheon sent me to an excellent emergency medicine class at their Denver site. I also brushed up on my blood draws and IV skills.” Dr. McGuire then reported to McMurdo Station in Antarctica, where she received further training for her time at the South Pole. “I worked with the X-ray technician and we discussed any questions I had,” she explains. “In addition, I worked on equipment with a lab technician, and I was actually able to do lab work on a few patients who came in. The lead physician at the station, Dr. Harry Owens (highlighted in August’s ‘La Vita Locum’ department), showed me the forms for safety reports and information regarding medical evacuations. In addition, I talked to the physical therapist about exercises I could use for people at the South Pole.” She continues, “I also spoke with the doctor at the South Pole Station before I went. When I arrived, my orientation was set up so that he was the one training me, and that made it much easier.” Thanks to the extensive orientation she received, Dr. McGuire was fully prepared to begin her regular duties. “My shift hours were 6 days per week, 9 hours per day, and I had call every other night and weekend,” she says. “But as I was the only physician, I would always be called in if an incident, such as a snowmobile accident or a broken leg, occurred.
