LocumLife - September 2008 - (Page 29) Danville. After reading this historical account, you have to marvel at the beneficence of this female visionary. I found northeastern Pennsylvania quite fascinating. Compared to where I come from, there is a sizeable Polish and Italian presence in Wilkes-Barre. In fact, pierogies, a well-known Polish delicacy, were often served as snacks in the OR lounge. Other treats were also forthcoming, and I happily sampled everything from pizza to homemade cookies and fruit and nut rolls. The richness of the town lies in the hospitality of its people. As a guest of a large Polish family, I was treated to a traditional Thanksgiving meal and marveled at the warmth and affection among those present. Summer celebrations —like the kielbasa and tomato festivals held in nearby towns—provide visitors with a flavor of the region. Another adjacent town heralded in the year with a sack of coal descending to a set of lights that depicted the New Year. The richness of the town lies in the hospitality of its people. One of the highlights of my stay was being able to night ski during the winter months. Several ski resorts close to Wilkes-Barre—Montage and Camelback Mountain— offered spectacular views of the Pocono Mountains as well as incredible skiing. The fresh snowfall and night skiing are not something I shall easily forget. A FOND FAREWELL As the recruitment efforts at the hospital reached fruition and the permanent anesthesiologists began arriving, my adventure in this friendly town came to a close. But what a send off—on my last day, the staff presented me with a large framed picture of the hospital signed by every member of the OR. This photograph is now proudly displayed in my office back home. I shall always remember my year in Wilkes-Barre—and its people, who were truly magnificent.
