Foreclosures jumped again in August, with California, Florida, and Arizona accounting for more than half of the nation’s activity. The government stepped in to rescue Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and insurance giant AIG. Each day, it seems like another bank or savings and loan is in trouble; meanwhile, the FDIC has added to its “problem list” of institutions that bear watching—117 at last count. And Wall Street’s woes continue to make news with the Dow tumbling nearly 778 points on September 29 when the proposed $700 billion bank bailout bill failed in the House. Last month, Hurricanes Gustav and Ike, which made landfall on the Gulf Coast states of Louisiana and Texas just 12 days apart, raised concerns about damage to life and property, as well as curtailed oil production from shuttered refineries, destroyed offshore platforms, and limited personnel due to evacuations. In Ike’s wake, Americans saw the largest 1-day jump in gas prices since Katrina—up 6.2 cents on September 14.
