Represents professionals who consider locum tenens to be their primary source of income. REGION AND SPECIALTY How did these locum tenens professionals fare by region of the country? When looked at individually, those MDs currently providing services chose contracts in the Southeast (49%) more often than any other region—up dramatically from the quarter of former temporary physicians who practiced in this area. Other favorite spots included the Southwest (47%), Midwest (39%), and Northeast (33%). The top regional pick of previous locum tenens physicians was the Southwest (33%), with an equal number of professionals (31%) choosing to provide services in the Northeast and Midwest. The Northwest region placed last in both groups, although it has gained in popularity somewhat, with 27% of current mobile MDs practicing there, versus 14% of their former colleagues.
