LocumLife - October 2008 - (Page 13) DOs DOING JUST FINE B elow are some overall findings about DOs, who comprised 12% of respondents. Due to the small sample size, use the following numbers as a rough gauge for comparison. In general, the DOs we sampled: Earned an average annual income of $146,700. Considered themselves full-time locum tenens practitioners, accepting only short-term opportunities (69% of respondents). Provided locum tenens services parttime, while still holding down a permanent position (31%). Practiced this career alternative for an average of 4 years and 9 months. Accepted fewer than four opportunities a year (3.7, on average), lasting approximately 6.5 weeks each. Delivered temporary services most frequently in the Midwest and Southwest, least frequently in the Northeast and Northwest. that region. These clinicians earned $202,000 annually, on average. Their counterparts in the Northwest reported the lowest income among our survey respondents, at $160,000 a year. Temporary MDs in the Midwest, Southeast, and Southwest pulled in an average of $193,100, $182,000, and $170,300, respectively, suggesting that other aspects of opportunities besides pay rates—including climate, geography, or seasonal events—play a definitive role in choice of locales. For MDs who currently provided services or had taken contracts in the past to supplement their income, the range of extra earnings was dramatic: from just $21,800 in the Northeast to $61,600 in the Midwest. Physicians in the Southeast garnered $58,200 in annual supplemental income, and doctors in the Southwest reported $48,000, with those in the Northwest noting $33,100. This disparity could reflect physicians’ choices in the numbers and types of opportunities taken, lengths of contracts, emergent needs of clients in the region, or differences in specialties’ pay rates. As a result, total annual incomes from all sources averaged $285,700 (Midwest), $248,400 (Southeast), $236,800 (Southwest), $225,000 (Northwest), and $193,200 (Northeast). In the case of the latter region, it appears that those MDs who practice locum tenens as their sole bread and butter do better overall than their colleagues who are employed or in private practice OCTOBER 2008 You deserve to work with the leader in locum tenens sta ng.
