Plus, malpractice history is analyzed closely. References from supervisors and colleagues are important, as are valid ACLS and BLS certifications. Training in endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is often preferred, but not required for all opportunities. Also, facilities tend to offer longer-term commitments to ensure continuity of care. “Beyond the required qualifications, I have found that locum tenens gastroenterologists need the overall ability to take on a patient panel and provide services with ease,” she continues. “You must be a team player, flexible, and open to new settings. Some of my best experiences have been working with physicians who are genuine and still enthralled with the medicine to which they have dedicated their lives. These physicians often have the availability to teach residents and mentor younger gastroenterologists, which many enjoy doing.” There are ways, she says, to get off to a promising start. “I recommend trying several practice settings to determine the best fit for your locum tenens career. Also, work with a staffing consultant who is well-versed in the field of gastroenterology, as he or she will be able to nurture your career from residency to retirement.” With its various benefits, it is understandable why many gastroenterologists find this lifestyle so appealing. “Locum tenens physicians have so much more flexibility to manage their careers,” concludes Ms. Laurence. “They set their own schedules, choose where they would like to practice, and are treated very well across the board.
