GROUP EDITOR Patricia Stille Lederman, plederman@advanstar.com MANAGING EDITOR Patricia Cusimano, pcusimano@advanstar.com ASSOCIATE EDITOR Traveling for fun? ast month, we took a closer look at temporary physicians’ compensation, available perks, and the level of satisfaction with this lifestyle and the locum tenens industry. Perhaps you, like many of our survey respondents, believe the greatest reward of this career alternative is the ability to accept contracts wherever and whenever you choose. Maybe your goal is to visit each of the 50 states before you retire. You might want to be closer to your parents, children, or other family members whom you have not seen in a while. Or, like those doctors in our cover story who have sailed the seven (or more) seas, you could use locum tenens as a means to see the world by practicing cruise ship medicine (page 10). Then again, you simply may desire the flexibility to take a real vacation now and then. If traveling for fun is on your “to do” list—before the start of a contract, as a long weekend during an opportunity, or as a break in between engagements— review your travel options carefully. Some schedule changes at U.S. airports were first introduced in July, spurred on by rising fuel costs and the slowing economy, but most will take effect in November—and that means fewer choices, longer lines, and higher prices, especially if you are taking to the skies for Turkey Day. In 2007, the Air Transport Association predicted 27 million passengers would fly during a 12-day “REVIEW YOUR period before and after Thanksgiving. This year, travOPTIONS carefully elers will be faced with 2,900 fewer domestic flights to when traveling by air.” seven major hub airports from November 20 through November 30. According to USA Today, this 11% decrease in non-stop flights translates into 2.6 million fewer seats. How does this affect your plans? Say you are traveling to Atlanta’s hub. There will be fewer flights there from New York (LaGuardia) (-58), Los Angeles (-30), Las Vegas (-22), and Orlando (-13), among other cities, this year. Overall, flights will be reduced by 13.3% at Chicago O’Hare, 10.4% at Houston (Bush), and 10% at Dallas/Fort Worth. On Thanksgiving Day, US Airways has cut 40% of its flights, Delta Air Lines has dropped 26%, and United Airlines has reduced its schedule by 22% over last year. The good news is, some airports—like San Antonio, Baltimore, and Fort Walton Beach—have actually added flights to their schedules. JetBlue is operating 3% more flights and Southwest plans to add 15 to its schedule at the end of the Thanksgiving weekend. To see what you can expect this fall and winter, go to www.usatoday.
