His five contracts have taken him to variety of locales, including the Plains, Appalachian Mountains, and “Keep in mind that an Indian Reservation, as well you need to be very as Alaska and Antarctica. Dr. Ross experienced the latter two flexible, particularly destinations on board cruises on ships.” as the ships’ physician. Arranged by Cleveland, —Ronald J. Ross, MD Ohio-based Locum Medical Group, the Alaskan cruise aboard Holland America’s ms Oosterdam took place August 25 to September 8 of last year. “The ship left out of Seattle and traveled up the southeastern coast of Alaska,” recalls Dr. Ross, who is usually accompanied by his wife. “I served as the ship’s physician for the patients and was responsible for anyone who became ill during the journey. I saw a variety of ages and medical conditions, most of them minor. I do recall repairing some minor lacerations.” Other medical personnel on the more than 1,800passenger ship included a physician for the crew and three nurses. “I received the same orientation that was given to any oncoming new crew—it was quite detailed,” notes Dr. Ross. “The chief medical officer also gave me a complete tour of the ship.” As part of the contract, he was provided a cabin, three meals a day, and transportation to and from the ship. While on board, Dr. Ross took advantage of his off time. “We stopped at various ports along the way, and I had the opportunity to get off the ship and walk around the towns.” But that was not his first cruise ship experience. In February of 1997, Dr. Ross was the ship’s physician on the HMS Explorer for its journey to the frozen continent. “The trip to Antarctica was quite exotic,” he comments. “We flew from Miami to Santiago, Chile, where we spent 2 days before flying to Ushuaia, the southernmost tip of South America. From there, we joined the ship’s crew and took off for the peninsula. During the trip out, the seas through the strait were about 20 feet, and we spent 12 days cruising around. The seas were about 50 feet on our 60-hour return voyage to Ushuaia. Circle Career Card No. 602 12 LocumLife NOVEMBER 2008 www.LocumLife.com http://locumtenens.comphealth.com http://www.LocumLife.com
