LocumLife - November 2008 - (Page 9) LocumLife Editorial Advisory Boards What advice can she give to residents considering locum tenens opportunities? Dr. Watkins suggests that the main challenge is garnering approval and facing administrative concerns. “Securing approval required discussion with the program director and letters of reference. Having the appropriate amount of training was also a consideration. I would have enjoyed completing locum tenens contracts as a third-year resident, but fourth-year residency was required. After the approval was in place, however, everything else was smooth sailing.” She adds, “It is also important for staffing company representatives to remain available for physicians. Those new to locum tenens really need that link, especially if any last-minute challenges come up. And, it is a good idea for agency staff to ask physicians for feedback about the medical facilities after contracts are completed.” Once on site, Dr. Watkins advises that locum tenens physicians talk with permanent staff at the contract location and ask them their opinions about the practice. “Additionally, as a resident, you will be able to test the waters to decide if that is a place you want to stay long-term. I also encourage residents to talk with other locum tenens physicians about the general pros and cons of this practice alternative.” In their roles, EAB members communicate with our editorial staff as schedules permit, submitting story ideas and/or manuscripts, offering perspectives on a variety of topics, and agreeing to be interviewed for articles. Houston, TX “The ability to adapt to different settings is critical, as is flexibility with regard to scheduling.” —Melanie Watkins, MD According to Dr. Watkins, locum tenens has reinforced a number of lessons for her. “If you have more than one contract, the ability to adapt to different settings is critical, as is flexibility with regard to scheduling. Also, being able to establish a rapport with patients and staff, often in a new setting, is a great life skill to develop. I have also found you need to be self-motivated, enthusiastic, smart, and very organized to handle your contracts and plan for future opportunities.” For now, Dr. Watkins has parlayed her locum tenens experience at a county facility into a permanent position in another county hospital in the same state. What else does her future hold? Probably more locum tenens opportunities, she says. “I enjoy the diversity, both in terms of patient populations and different settings.” L L Amy Sutton is a freelance writer based in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. www.LocumLife.com HEALTHCARE ORGANIZATIONS Howard Greenfield, MD Vice President of Corporate Development Sheridan Healthcare Sunrise, FL Sherise Layton Clinic Administrator Mid Valley Medical Group/ Mid Valley Hospital Omak, WA Fred Mack Director of Physician Recruitment Cancer Treatment Centers of America Tulsa, OK William J.
