This particular locum tenens experience was memorable for other reasons as well. On the way home, the Smiths flew into New Orleans just as the city was being evacuated for Hurricane Katrina. Mr. Smith had grown up just north of Louisiana’s Lake Pontchartrain, so he knew his way around. He used the back roads to get his family home safely, just 2 days before Katrina hit The Big Easy. The Smiths were without power for more than 3 weeks. “My colleagues from that opportunity knew I lived near New Orleans, so they called my staffing company to make sure we were safe,” he recalls fondly. “They were an extremely caring group of people.” Being licensed in six states gives Mr. Smith a wide array of locum tenens choices, as does being part of the high-demand anesthesia team. He typically practices up to 2 weeks at a time before returning home. “Government contracts are not an option because they usually require a longer commitment—at least 90 days. And now that we have a young son as well as a flower and gift shop, I tend to choose contracts closer to home. However, that does not preclude me from accepting future locum tenens opportunities in far away locations because my daughter and wife miss seeing new places.
