LocumLife - December 2008 - (Page 17) RESOURCES Med Ec-cerpts Highlights from Medical Economics Money management ‘GREEN’ INVESTING Q: How can I invest in a more environmentally friendly manner? A: “Green” investing is an area that is certainly growing in interest, with some investors looking to put their money into companies that are doing their best to minimize harm to the planet, while others are simply looking to get behind what could be the next big growth industry. In either case, many investors would rather not deal with the worry of picking individual stocks. For such investors, exchange-traded funds (ETFs)—baskets of stocks that follow a particular index and are bought and sold like conventional stocks—could be the answer. A number of ETFs hold stocks of companies dedicated to alternative energy or clean technology. For starters, consider the PowerShares WilderHill Clean Energy Portfolio or the Claymore/LGA Green ETF. Each consists of stocks from companies that are involved in alternative energy. CHOOSING THE RIGHT EXECUTOR Q: I have started writing my will. What factors should I consider when choosing an executor? A: Selecting an executor is not a decision to be taken lightly. The executor is in charge of accounting for all your assets, paying off all your debts, and distributing your assets to the heirs you have selected. One pitfall to avoid is selecting a beneficiary, such as a spouse or a child, as an executor. Doing so can create a conflict of interest because that person may have to decide between distributing assets between himself and another beneficiary. Because of the complexity involved in tabulating assets and working with creditors, it is better to choose a business-savvy friend—but not a business partner, because of a potential conflict of interest involved in the decision to sell the business. If this does not sound like anyone you know, do not despair. Attorneys or accountants can be good options. Keep in mind that they will seek a cut of your assets in return for their work.
