A STRONG OUTLOOK What do interested neonatologists need to know about locum tenens? “More and more, hospitals are requiring board certification,” explains Mr. Hathaway. “It is viewed as a red flag if you are not boardcertified, especially if many years have passed since you completed training. Also, recent and verifiable hands-on experience is critical. If it has been a year since you worked in a NICU, it will be harder to have your hospital credentials approved.” He adds, “Regarding skill set, we can usually navigate around elective procedures, such as circumcisions, but the ability to intubate is a must.” Being organized is also essential. “Understand that there is a credentialing process for each facility and that paperwork is involved,” continues Mr. Hathaway. “I advise my providers to scan their diplomas, current licenses with the expiration date, training and board certificates, CMEs, and any additional certifications, such as NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support), into electronic files with PDF or TIF formats. Keep them on a CD with a current curriculum vitae so they are readily available and can be e-mailed as needed.” Both staffing companies and client facilities, he says, are looking for true professionals. “You need to arrive at the facility when you are scheduled and respond to the needs of the clients. Traveling well and communicating with your staffing agency are also important factors.
