DESTINATIONS On location in East Texas Photo: Getty Images/StockTrek/Photodisc Weathering the effects of Hurricane Ike Thanks to temporary contracts, locum tenens professionals can usually immerse themselves in their climates of choice, regardless of the time of year. But, as Carol Andrus, MD, and Francisco Menendez, MD, discovered, there are no guarantees. Lisa Daggett T his sentiment is especially true when it comes to Mother Nature. Both of these physicians, who accept matches through Houston, Texas-based Whitaker Medical, were recently reminded of this fact when Hurricane Ike—the third most destructive storm to hit the United States coast—shook things up while they were on location in East Texas. THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM Family practice physician Carol Andrus, MD, was providing temporary services at a men’s correctional facility northeast of Houston, Texas, when Hurricane Ike appeared on the radar. “I was 2 weeks into the contract when it became clear that a storm was approaching. When we were ordered to evacuate, I went to stay with my brother who, fortunately, lives about 300 miles to the north.” “I felt good about being able to help out in a time of need.” —Carol Andrus, MD company. “My recruiter called to check on me that Monday. Once I assured him that I was fine, he explained that the prison was desperate for coverage. So I immediately jumped in the car and headed back.” RETURNING TO THE SCENE Though Dr. Andrus was not sure what the prison—or hotel—conditions would be like, she was committed to completing the last week of her contract. “The drive back to town was a bit eerie. There were very few vehicles on the highway, but repair crews and downed power lines were everywhere. I was relieved to arrive at the hotel and see that not only was it still standing, but that it had both running water and backup power. Most rooms were occupied by state police, but my www.LocumLife.com Just 2 days later, on Saturday, September 13, Ike ripped through the area, causing power outages, widespread flooding, and substantial destruction.
