LocumLife - December 2008 - (Page 30) DESTINATIONS On location DESTINATIONS Anyone’s Guess OFFICIAL RULES about 100 to 110 films a day. And on my first day, I read upward of 200 cases, since things had piled up due to lack of resources and a malfunction in the teleradiology system that was normally utilized after hours. Once we got caught up, and the system was repaired, however, I read studies from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. There were also some occasions when they had questions for me after hours, and I was glad to help out, especially since I was living in the hospital anyway.” After lending a helping hand, the physicians prepared for their return home on Friday when electricity finally came on again at the facilities. Many of the cases Dr. Menendez saw were storm-related. “Besides the typical things this agricultural community usually presents with, we also saw many people with injuries from fallen branches, flying debris, and falls from ladders. We also saw one woman, about 7 months pregnant, who had gotten an infection but could not get to us during the storm. By the time she came in, she was basically in septic shock, and she coded. Fortunately, they were able to bring her back and by the end of the week, she was doing quite well.” As Dr. Menendez was preparing to return home on Friday, the electricity finally came on again. “The timing was perfect. I was glad to see that everything would be okay, and I was deeply grateful that I was able to help out at such a crucial time. All week long, people worked together, stayed positive, and helped in any way they could. It was a very positive experience, and I was grateful to be a part of it.” L L REFERENCE Beaumont Enterprise.
