As a result, family medicine practitioners will find opportunities available in outpatient, hospital-based, and urgent care settings. What can you expect to earn? A locum tenens physician in New Zealand can receive between $95,000 and $250,000 New Zealand dollars per year (roughly $55,000 to $146,000 U.S. dollars). By New Zealand standards, specialty is the primary factor determining salary, followed by years in practice. In Australia, a locum tenens physician can earn $120,000 to $300,000 Australian dollars, or roughly between $80,000 and $199,000 U.S. dollars. Likewise, salary is based on specialty and years in practice. Your locum tenens advisor can help you determine whether an international opportunity is in your best interest. One locum tenens doctor recently noted, “I earn half as much [as in the United States] but I work half as much. You need to be in a position in your life where that makes sense for you; then it’s awesome.” What type of status will you have? In both Australia and New Zealand, physicians often become temporary employees of their host hospital or clinic. Internationally, there can be distinct advantages to practicing as a temporary employee rather than as an independent contractor. For example, employed doctors receive benefits, malpractice insurance coverage, and about 30 days—or 6 weeks—of annual paid vacation. Another advantage for physicians with this status is that they receive their entire paychecks. They are paid by the medical facility, so there is no pass-through from their salaries. Instead, the contract facility pays the locum tenens company for finding, vetting, and preparing them. What are some of the benefits and challenges you can expect? Houston, TX change of pace that might be both a benefit and a challenge. Things move more slowly, and you will have more time off. Under such relaxed conditions, you will no longer feel as if you are on a treadmill. But, no matter how welcome this change is, some doctors find it takes time to get used to the laid-back lifestyle. Another challenge is the difference in both pharmaceutical terminology and slang. Though individuals “Down Under” speak English, and it is relatively easy to communicate and practice medicine effectively, deciphering all those new meanings takes time and effort—but also brings a lot of laughter and insight. One definite benefit can be seen immediately upon arrival. New Zealand and Australia are full of very hospitable people.
