LocumLife - January 2009 - (Page 23) Thanks to Izzy’s f lexible contract, we traveled all around New Zealand during our time in the country. Many of our Kiwi friends said that we had been to more places than they had. (See our Top 10 list on the facing page.) It was a sad day when we left Wellington in April 2008. Even though we had not been there long, New Zealand felt like home. Izzy loved the people he worked with and he was surprised with three going-away parties. I knew my husband had a good sense of humor, but I had never heard him give such a witty speech before. His farewell speech brought tears and laughter to the entire hospital staff. ON THE ROAD AGAIN We took the long way home, traveling to the Cook Islands, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, Chile, and Peru (including the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and the Nazca Lines). I reveled in the abundance of photo opportunities. After a month, we returned home and started searching for our next locum tenens adventure. There are so many locum tenens opportunities available, it is hard to sort through them to find the best situation. You never know if a better offer will turn up after you commit to a contract. The main criterion that we look for in an opportunity is an interesting location with no tornadoes, no hurricanes, and no extreme cold. When choosing an engagement, however, it helps to be extremely flexible. CompHealth, also based in Salt Lake City, Utah, found Izzy’s next opportunity at a Veteran’s Administration (VA) facility out West in July 2008. » IZZY AND ME at Machu Picchu (left) and just one of the classic cars we saw on location out West.
