LocumLife - January 2009 - (Page 7) LocumLife Editorial Advisory Boards airport early. One of the most stressful events faced by today’s traveler involves arriving late to find long lines for security screening. To speed up the check-in process, consider printing your boarding pass beforehand at your home or office. This can be especially helpful if you only intend to travel with carry-on luggage. Carrying your bags on board decreases the chance of mishandled and lost luggage by the air carrier. Furthermore, it also avoids the new fees assigned to checked baggage. Before selecting which luggage to bring with you, check with your airline to find out its standard measurements for carry-on bags. With many carriers choosing to downsize aircraft, dimensions for carry-ons are becoming smaller as well. If your bag will not fit current bin specifications, you will need to check your luggage at the gate and pick it up in baggage claim once you reach your final destination. Proper selection of luggage can also play an important role in comfort during travel. Bags that have external pockets are great for packing those liquid and gel containers that must be removed quickly for security screening. Houston, TX Passengers who have not pre-selected seats on an oversold flight are more likely to be bumped from its itinerary. If your travel calls for an extended stay, consider packing light with clothes that may be interchanged for a professional look. Utilization of local dry cleaners or hotel laundry services can also assist in reducing luggage volume. And using an overnight courier to ship additional clothes to your hotel or apartment can cut down on the weight of carry-ons. In addition, choosing to wear clothing that is travel friendly—like light, breathable natural fabrics—can increase your comfort level on long flights. And, selecting shoes that are easily removable can speed your trip through passenger screening. SELECTING YOUR SEAT In today’s adverse economic environment, you should select your seats whenever possible. Passengers who have not pre-selected seats on an oversold flight are more likely to be bumped from its itinerary. When choosing your seat, consider your goals for the flight. Travel warriors who desire to use a laptop or DVD player may want to select a seat with in-flight power.
