BRAVERY ON THE BATTLEFIELD In December 1944, not long after the Battle of the Bulge had commenced, Dr. Feldman was enjoying a brief respite in Paris. “Some of us had been granted a 3-day leave while the city of Saarlautern was stable,” he recalls. “We were assigned nice rooms in a high-class hotel, and I took my first bath in 3 months. We went on tours and trips around the city, and I can distinctly remember a bunch of us going to the Moulin Rouge one evening. There we were, watching this exquisite show, after just having been in combat and living in the dirt and mud for so long.” Dr. Feldman then returned to battle to care for his regiment fighting in Bastogne, Belgium, which was covered in snow. “The biggest problem I had to take care of,” he remembers, “was immersion or ‘trench’ foot because everybody lying or sleeping in foxholes would suffer from frostbite.” Thankfully, Dr. Feldman and his regiment were able to recover afterward. “In the beginning of 1945, we were put up in a village in western Belgium for several weeks of rest and recreation. Our regiment and the residents actually became very close. The family we stayed with was a middleaged couple with a young son and daughter, with whom we would play ball and give chocolate and presents.
