Styling & Performance - June 2008 - (Page 10) I-CAR NAMES EDELEN PRESIDENT/CEO……MAHLE ACQUIRES MEXICAN I-CAR Names Edelen President, CEO he International Board of Directors of the Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair (I-CAR) recently announced the appointment of John W. Edelen to president and chief executive officer for the organization. Edelen has served as interim chief executive since November 2007. “The board is pleased with the progress that I-CAR is making under John’s leadership, and we want to see this progress continue,” says Sam Pezzullo, vice-chairman of I-CAR’s International Board of Directors. “The past months at I-CAR have been both challenging and rewarding,” Edelen says. “The organization has stepped up to meet the challenges of these difficult times for the auto collision repair inter-industry, and for I-CAR. I am grateful for the support of I-CAR volunteers, instructors and staff, and for the confidence that the I-CAR board has placed in me. I commit to do all that I T can to lead I-CAR in fulfilling the mission for which it was created by the auto collision inter-industry, close to 30 years ago.” Edelen had been a member of I-CAR’s International Board of Directors for five years. He had been an officer at Allstate Insurance Company, responsible for Allstate’s auto claim handling practices. He is a graduate of Rutgers College and of New York Law School. Edelen has participated in a number of executive post-graduate courses, including studies at The Sloan School of Management at MIT, The Kellogg School of Management of Northwestern University, and a consortium of MIT, Tufts and Harvard, in Boston. During the past 10 years, Edelen has served on a number of for-profit and non-profit boards, including Tech-Co LLC; Sterling Collision Repair Centers; the Certified Aftermarket Parts Association; the CynCast Corporation; and I-CAR, where he most recently served as board chairman. SANYO, Volkswagon Developing Lithium-Ion Battery Systems S MAHLE Acquires Mexican Engine-Parts Manufacturer T he Germany-based MAHLE Group announced its purchase of Clemex Mexico S.A. de C.V., and aftermarket engine parts producer. Employing 400 people, Clemex produces engine bearings and bushings for the automotive aftermarket and global manufacturers, and the company recorded $16 million in sales last year. It will continue to operate under its current name until 2009, when it will merge into the MAHLE Group. “The acquisition allows us to complete the restructuring of our U.S. bearings business and will significantly improve our North American bushings business, “ says Prof. Dr. Heinz K. Junker, chairman of the management board for the MAHLE Group. “It gives us a platform for further growth in the North American light-duty engine bearings market as a producer of high-quality products at reasonable costs.” For more information, visit MAHLE.com. Vehicles (HEV). “We are pleased that Volkswagen has chosen to co-develop next-generation Li-ion HEV battery systems with SANYO,” says Mitsuru Honma, SANYO Company Vice President. “Since SANYO and Volkswagen have had a strong relationship in the past with the co-development of nickel-metal Hydride systems, we look forward to furthering our relationship and will focus on developing products that will benefit the environment with more effective energy storage, Volkswagen and their customers in the future.” Responding to societal environmental protection concerns and surging oil prices, SANYO says it has strengthened its business and development of highperformance rechargeable batteries for the rapidly-expanding HEV market. SANYO has already provided Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) HEV batteries for Ford and Honda. In January 2006, SANYO and Volkswagen agreed to co-develop next-generation Ni-MH systems.
