Styling & Performance - June 2008 - (Page 14) By Bob McClurg with Pam & Browny Cooksey length tubular upper and lower control arms hooked up to a set of two-inch-dropped ART front spindles dampened by a set of ART “Shockwave” coilover shocks and a CPP front anti-sway bar. Rear suspension on the K5 is a four-inchnarrowed Ford 9-inch live rear axle equipped with 3.90:1 gearing, riding on ART “Shock Wave 9000” trailing arm rear suspension with Classic Performance brackets, ART shocks, and CPP anti-roll bar. The brakes are a combination of K5 Blazer up front, and Street Rod Manufacturing Co. out back activated by a National Power Brakes (NPB) power brake booster and disc brake proportioning valve. Wheels and tires on the truck are 20x8-inch Browny and Pam Cooksey’s homegrown 1971 K5 Blazer 2x4 was bought new, and has been in the family since then. These days however, the Street & Performance, Inc/Corvette LS6-engine truck leads a less hectic “life” on the truck and car show circuit where it has been a frequent winner. front, and 2x10-inch rear KMC SS wheels rolling on 265/50x20 front, and 295/45x22-rear BF Goodrich G-Force T/A radial rubber. Inside, Browny installed a 1997 Chevy Silverado 4x4 dash equipped with a No Limit Engineering dash bezel and Auto Meter gauges. Also along for the ride is an ididit GM six-way tilt-steering column topped by a Billet Specialties steering wheel, Vintage Air climate control, American Auto wiring and Specialty Power Window kit, and Pioneer AVIC-D2-GPS radio with Alpine AMP and speakers. The K5’s 1997 Chevrolet front-rear bench seat, and the rest of the interior, were dyed Viper Blue to match the exterior of the truck. Both the roll bar and that fancy headliner were custom made and installed by the owner. The K5’s vent windows have also been removed and replaced with one-piece tinted glass, and C5 Corvette side mirrors have been installed. Out in the back of the truck is where you’ll fi nd an Optima Red Top battery, and the Air Ride Technologies main controls located inside the spare tire well. Outside, the K5 makes use of 1967 Chevrolet truck front sheet metal and a grill. Those cameo hood louvers were also custom installed by the owner. You’ll also fi nd a Dodge compartment was done by Browny. Engine cooling is handled by a show polish AFCO fourcore-aluminum radiator with dual puller fans. The accompanying GM 4L60E four-speedelectronic-overdrive transmission is from Mesquite’s Burris Transmission. Suspension on the Enduro powder-coated K5 chassis has been upgraded to Air Ride Technologies (ART) “Strong Arm” front suspension. Up front, you’ll fi nd a set of ART un-equal Mini Van fuel door. Actual paint is PPG Viper Blue two-stage, while all chrome trim including the bumpers is the handiwork of “Pulidos.” Completed over nine years at a cost of $52,000—minus labor—Browny and Pam’s K5 captured “Best In Class” at the 2008 Dallas Autorama, as well as fi rst place in the Truck and Van class at the Texas Showcar Association-promoted 2008 Fort Worth Rod & Custom Car Show. TRUE BLUE BLAZER O n December, 7, 1973, Chevrolet enthusiasts “Browny” and Pam Cooksy from Mesquite, Texas, bought this year-old Chevrolet K5 Blazer 2x4 for a whopping $2,400. The K5 served as the couple’s sole means of transportation for seven years, prior to their reselling it to grandfather Reverand George “Browny” Brown who drove the truck until January, 1991. Then grandpa gave the couple the truck back. The quality in workmanship is quite apparent once you take a look at this owner-built 1997 PPG Dodge Viper-hued beauty. “This is a frame-off ‘restifi cation,’” Browny says. “All the work was done by Pam and myself except for the upholstery, which was done by Wayne Bayless.” These days, a Young Chevrolet/GM Performance Parts 10.5:1 compression 2003 vintage Corvette LS6 powers Cooksy’s ride, factory rated at 405 horsepower. Upgrades to the engine include a Street & Performance serpentine belt-drive system, S&P-polished 200 AMP alternator, S&P-polished a/c compressor, and S&P drive-by-wire electronic engine management wiring harness. The exhaust system is a combination of S&P and Borla parts. All of the fancy sheet metal work inside the engine 14 Styling & Performance I Uniting The Specialty Parts Industry
