Styling & Performance - June 2008 - (Page 16) A CHEYENNE WITH ALL THE TRIMMINGS By Bob McClurg JIM CARTER’S CLASSIC TRUCK PARTS Independence, Missouri’s Jim Carter Classic Truck Parts has been in the Chevrolet/ GMC light-duty truck parts and accessories business for 28 years. “The great thing about the ‘67-72s is that they can easily be adapted to the ‘creature comforts’ that people like: automatic transmission, power steering and many other extras that aftermarket companies are now making, such as power windows, power door locks, etc.,” he says. “And, since this is a full-sized truck, you can install virtually any smallblock or big-block-Chevrolet V8 engine in them, and you’re down the highway!” M ike Harris of Abilene, Texas, is the proud owner of this restored, second-owner tor. Ignition duties are handled by an MSD Pro Billet setup, while the exhaust is handled by a set of ceramic-coated Hedman Hedders and 2-1/2-inch-diameter Flowmaster two-chamber Medium Blue and White 1972 Chevrolet Cheyenne C-10 long wheelbase pickup. “It belonged to my grandpa, and he passed it along to me,” Harris says. Credit for the one-year restoration goes to Harris, his brother Tim and father-in-law Bill Wells. Starting with the chassis, the guys restored the stock 3.73:1 GM 12-bolt leaf spring rear end and suspension, installing all GM/Mr. Goodwrench bushings and U-joints along with rebuilding the rear drum brakes. Up front, the trio installed new GM/Mr. Goodwrench suspension grommets and tie rod ends to the disc brake front suspension as well as adding a set of Monroe Gas-Matic shock absorbers on all corners. Wheels and tires consist of a set of non-original 15x8-inch Corvette “Rally” wheels wrapped with a set of 275/60x15-inch Goodyear whitewall radials. In the course of restoring the chassis, the stock 20-gallon gas tank was also replaced with an NOS unit. Conversely, things are somewhat less than stock under the hood. Powering the Cheyenne C-10 is an Eddie Browder-machined 1972 fourbolt-main 350 Chevrolet block stuffed with a set of 10.7:1 compression JE flat-top pistons, a set of Manley Performance 350 Chevrolet connecting rods, and an Eddie Browder-prepared 350 Chevrolet crank riding on Federal Mogul Performance engine bearings. The cam choice is a Holley-Lunati (278/288 duration, 517/543 max valve lift) along with the timing chain and remaining valve train components. The oil pump and oil pan—a circulating Torco 20/40W—are from Moroso Performance. Bolted up top is a set of Eddie Browderported and polished 350 Chevrolet cylinder heads outfi tted with Lunati and Manley valve train hardware. Induction comes in the form of a Holley Street Dominator intake bolted to a Barry Grant 670-cfm Street Demon carbure- TUCKER’S CLASSIC PICKUP Tucker’s Classic Pickup Parts was founded in early 1990 by Jerry Tucker out of his two-car garage. In fact, Jerry Tucker used the old truck restoration parts business to put himself through college and obtain his architectural degree. “Out of those years, the ‘67-72 Chevrolet/GMC is probably our second most popular selling line,” says Cody Tucker Jerry’s son and shop’s general manager. “Offhand, I would say this product line represents about 35 to 40 percent of our total gross.” ABOVE: We’ll bet old Grandpa would be real surprised if he took a ride in his truck now. Harris, Wells and engine buildermachinist Eddie Browder are responsible or that healthy GM small-block. RIGHT: The interior features reproduction blue-andwhite hounds tooth upholstery and black-loop carpeting. The only non-original item inside this truck is the 1994 Chevrolet truck air-conditioning system. SOURCES MAR-K QUALITY PARTS exhaust system. Engine cooling is handled by a stock four-core GM radiator. Backing this all up is a 3000 stall-speed, owner-built 1972 GM TH350 automatic sending the power back through a stock 72-inch Chevrolet drive shaft. The two brothers were responsible for performing the ‘72’s flawless bodywork. Then they re-painted Grandpa’s Cheyenne in PPG Medium Blue and White. As far as 1972 Chevrolet “resto-rod pickups” are concerned, this is one of the best.
