Veterinary Medicine - March 2009 - (Page 119) Author Guidelines update these when the edited copy is received for final approval. (Examples of reference format can be found in past issues of Veterinary Medicine.) Illustrative materials Digital photos should have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi at 3 inches wide in TIF, JPEG, or EPS format. When sending hard copies of illustrative materials, authors should retain one copy of all illustrative materials submitted and send three copies. Figures and tables should be numbered sequentially and cited at the appropriate places in the text. Legends for figures and illustrations should be concise and typed on a separate sheet of paper. Avoid long, complicated graphs, tables, and charts. Drawings (e.g. algorithms and special or surgical anatomy) are encouraged. Pay careful attention to radiographic technique—we cannot enhance a poorquality radiograph. Photos and radiographs should not be trimmed (crop marks can be indicated on borders), and the top and right and left sides of the illustration must be clearly marked. Arrows and letters on photographs should be clear and must be explained in accompanying captions. Format Manuscripts should be typewritten, double-spaced, and submitted in triplicate. The text should not exceed 3,000 words (eight to 10 pages) and should include subheads where appropriate. In general, use generic names of drugs. If a trade name is necessary, include the manufacturer’s name. Enclose a cover letter indicating the name, affiliation, address, and phone number of the author responsible for correspondence. Manuscripts on CD: In addition to sending hard copies, authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts on two CDs compatible with Microsoft Word. Authors who use WordPerfect are encouraged to save their work on disk as a Microsoft Word file. Please do not embed figures within the Word document, put them in a separate file. (See “Illustrative materials” for information on submitting digital photos.) Manuscripts via e-mail: Please e-mail the manuscript to the e-mail address below as an attached file compatible with Microsoft Word. Your e-mail message can serve as a cover letter. Do not imbed illustrations or tables in the text document—send them in a separate file. (See “Illustrative materials” for information on submitting digital photos.) manuscripts are subject to routine editing. Veterinary Medicine reserves the right to modify or rewrite titles as part of routine copyediting. A prepublication draft is sent to the designated author for clarification, fact checking, and approval. Authors The list of authors should include the first and last names, academic degrees, board certification, affiliations, and complete addresses for all listed. A current phone number and e-mail address for the author responsible for correspondence is necessary. Include a current fax number if available. Authors who change addresses after a manuscript has been accepted but before it has been published should notify us of the new address and phone number. References References should be indicated in the text by superscript and must appear in numerical order. Cite references for original studies where appropriate. Key sources must be properly referenced, but seldom are more than 20 current references necessary. References listed as personal communications should include the affiliation and address of the communicator, as well as the month and year of the communication. Unpublished data may be alluded to in the text (e.g. Smith S, Jones JK, Ruiz TD, et al., Biological Research Division, Pitman-Moore. Washington Crossing, NJ: Unpublished data, 2002). References may include papers accepted for publication but not yet published. If possible, the author should Publication and reprints The time between acceptance of manuscripts and publication varies from four to 12 months.
