Pharmaceutical Executive Digest Europe - January 14, 2009 - (Page 9) Singapore: Funding the Future Kian Teik Beh, director of the Biomedical Sciences Group at the Singapore Economic Development Board, tells Pharm Exec Europe what Singapore can offer to pharma and biotech companies looking for long-term investment. What makes Singapore attractive to pharma and biotech companies? At the Singapore Economic Development Board, we’ve been involved both in talking specifically to individual companies and raising general awareness about the Singapore region for over 30 years. In the 1970s those conversations largely concerned manufacturing — a trend that continues to this day — but in recent years, from 2000 onwards, we’ve also been focusing on R&D opportunities. The fundamental investment Singapore has made in science and technology over the last decade is really coming to fruition now — investments in genomics, molecular engineering, bioprocessing technology and so on. The science budget in the current five-year-plan has been doubled to Singapore$13.5 billion ( 6.5 billion), and the country plans to increase scientific funding to 3% of the gross domestic product by 2010 (ahead of Britain and the US). All this has positioned Singapore as one of the major bioclusters in Asia. lot smarter establishing what cost actually means. Some sectors are more cost sensitive than others; some recognise that cost isn’t the most important criterion. From our engagement with pharma and biotechnology companies, I would say they fall into the latter category. Just as important to them are other concerns such as intellectual property, manpower capabilities, quality.
