Pharmaceutical Executive Digest Europe - January 21, 2009 - (Page 4) Pharma and Obama round the same time this week’s Pharma Exec Digest Europe reaches your inbox, Barack Obama is officially assuming his new role as the most powerful leader in the free world (after what seems quite a tortuous wait — ‘Dubya’ having been ‘winding down’ since about December 2006.) Naturally, there has been much speculation in these and other journals’ pages about what the new administration will mean for the industry, particularly the effects on pharma of mooted healthcare reforms, pricing reviews and technology policy turnabouts. On page 8, our IT guru George Laszlo gets down to the nuts and bolts and explores how Obama’s policies might affect health information technology (HIT). The implications of new policies on HIT are more wide-ranging than you think; they affect areas from patient records and health insurance to safety and anti-counterfeiting. Here in Europe, pharma was hit by a slide in shares in the immediate aftermath of Obama’s victory. GlaxoSmithKline, Novartis and Sanofi-aventis all saw falls of 4% or more amid fears that the new administration would mean compromised profits. But this was a typical knee-jerk EDITORIAL ADVISORY BOARD Pharmaceutical Executive Europe’s Editorial Advisory Board (EAB) is a distinguished group of specialists who represent various facets of the pharmaceutical industry. EAB members suggest article subjects relevant to the industry, review article manuscripts, participate in events and answer questions as they arise. A reaction to a Democratic victory. The feeling across Europe generally is one of optimism for the new US government (albeit an optimism tainted with concern for the global economic situation). This was summed up by European Commission president José Manuel Barroso, who said in an interview with euronews just after the US election: ”European people are expecting a lot from [Obama]. For several reasons I believe the conditions are right for us to work together … on the financial crisis, on the global agenda for prosperity, for trade, UN objectives for the millennium, for the development of international aid, for the promotion of peace, human rights [and] the fight against climate change.” Let’s hope this optimism and spirit of co-operation extends through the pharma world. Pharmaceutical Executive Digest Europe provides industry intelligence so managers in the European pharmaceutical community can advance their business, management and marketing practices to gain competitive advantage. PEE interprets the current and future challenges the industry faces and enables pharmaceutical professionals to overcome them with cost-effective, time-saving solutions.
