Pharmaceutical Executive Digest Europe - January 28, 2009 - (Page 2) News Belgium’s Cardio3 BioSciences banks €13.7m Cardio3 BioSciences, a Belgian biotechnology company specialising in cell-based therapies for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, has raised €7.2 million in a successful Series B fund raising round. The new funds, which have come from a range of new and existing investors, will be used to finance the clinical development of the Company’s lead product, C-Cure, a therapy that allows the differentiation of a patient’s own cells into ‘cardiopoïetic’ cells, which grow into new heart cells and repair heart muscle. The company has raised a further €6.5 million in cash advances from the Walloon Region General Directorate for Economy, Employment & Research. These funds, which bear no interest, become repayable on the commercialisation of C-Cure. Cardio3 BioSciences was founded in 2007 by clinicians from the Cardiovascular Center in Aalst, Belgium with a with a view to developing a cell-based approach for the treatment of heart disease. Teva and Lonza in biosimilars partnership Teva Pharmaceutical Industries (Israel) has entered into a strategic partnership with Lonza to develop, manufacture and market biosimilars. The two companies will collaborate to market a number of “affordable and safe” generic equivalents of a selected portfolio of biologic pharmaceuticals. “We have identified biosimilars as a major growth driver for Teva in our long-term strategy and have been augmenting our knowledge base, capabilities and infrastructure to position Teva as a leader in the market,” said Shlomo Yanai Teva’s president and CEO.
