Pharmaceutical Executive Digest Europe - January 28, 2009 - (Page 3) EDITORIAL ADVISORY BOARD Confidence in a crisis I n the light of Pfizer’s announcement earlier this month that it is to lose as many as 800 researchers as it restructures its R&D operations, Jacky Law takes a look this week at how the world’s biggest pharma company appears to be losing its confidence. The company’s last major success to have emanated from its own research effort is now 10 years old (Viagra, as if you need to ask). By the end of the year, Pfizer, which currently has about 10000 researchers, will have laid off 5–8% of its global research staff. And, in what Jacky calls a “spectacular and well-documented decline,” this cull is to continue “beyond the sales reps to managers and scientists.” So far, overall, the company has cut its staff back from 122000 in 2003 to around 86000 today. Pfizer has announced that it is now going to focus its research efforts on Alzheimer’s Disease, oncology, schizophrenia, pain, inflammation and diabetes, and that the job cuts “reflect this realignment.” But the streamlining of its research is not going to pay any early dividends. That may only be achieved, as we have mentioned before, by the shrewd deployment of its cold, hard cash reserves. Of course, Pfizer is not the only behemoth to be experiencing hard times. Far from it. And this week it was joined by, Johnson and Johnson (J&J), who reported that it has seen its first revenue decline in 76 years. J&J’s chairman Bill Weldon nonetheless announced that the company is confident, “positioned well for growth” and that it “has made significant progress in its research pipeline.” If this remark about confidence is genuine, then J&J might want to start bottling it and selling it to the rest of us.
