Pharmaceutical Executive Digest Europe - February 3, 2009 - (Page 1) News UK biotech sector calls for immediate action Despite “excellent progress,” the UK biotech sector is at risk unless immediate financing measures are put in place, Sir David Cooksey, chairman of the Bioscience 2015 Review and Refresh Steering Group, has said. The recently-published Bioscience 2015 Review and Refresh is an update of recommendations made in 2003, and the new report also calls for tax incentives to invest in biotechnology; a closer partnership between the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency and its EU and international counterparts; and an independent inquiry to assess NICE’s long-term impact on the cost, access to, and uptake of, medicines in the UK Much has been achieved since the publication of the original Bioscience 2015 report, including government reinforcement and ring-fencing of the funding of medical research; the introduction of effective legislation to tackle animal rights extremism, and the establishment of bioProcessUK, which has fostered strong links between business and academia in the field of bioprocessing. But, Sir David Cooksey commented: “It is vital that the problem that the sector is currently facing from inadequate financing is addressed, otherwise the future of early-stage bioscience companies is in doubt.” Welcoming the report, Clive Dix, chairman of the BioIndustry Association, said: “It is vital that this report and its recommendations are acted on swiftly to safeguard a generation of emerging bioscience companies. The UK has enormous potential in this field and we hope this report will speed up the translation of innovative research into new medicines and treatments for patients.” Turn to page 5 for Reflector’s take on the Biosciences report.
