Pharmaceutical Executive Digest Europe - February 3, 2009 - (Page 2) News Almac dodge credit crunch The Almac Group (Craigavon, Northern Ireland) has announced it is looking to further expansion in 2009 with further sites in the USA, after expanding its workforce by 250 last year. During 2008 staff numbers at its Northern Ireland facilities rose by 15% to 1,428 and in the US by 10% to 762. Growth in employee numbers has taken place across the group, particularly in the clinical trial and research areas, Almac has said. Of the nearly 600 survey respondents — international readers of BioPharm International at various management and mid-management levels — the majority earned over $65,790 ( 50,000) a year. 37% of US respondents earned more than $100,000; in Europe, 39% earned over 70,000 (92,105). Nearly half of all respondents were satisfied with their salaries; 23% were extremely or very satisfied. “The pay is excellent in the biopharmaceutical sector when you get into specialized skills,” said BioPharm International’s editorial advisor Stephan Krause, who is director of quality at MPex Pharmaceuticals. “With the number of unemployed people in the job market, your negotiating power during a job interview might be less, but the salaries haven’t gone down,” However, as the figure below shows, there is still a significant disparity between the earnings of men and women in biopharm on both sides of the Atlantic. The company will initiate a small, multicentre Phase I safety trial of GRNOPC1 in patients with acute spinal cord injuries. GRNOPC1 contains oligodendrocyte progenitor cells, derived from human embryonic stem cells, which have demonstrated remyelinating and nerve growth-stimulating properties leading to restoration of function in animal models of acute spinal cord injury.
