Pharmaceutical Executive Digest Europe - February 11, 2009 - (Page 2) From the Editor A week in pharma is a long time F or an industry that requires development and trial times that span into decades, it’s quite amazing how much pharma activity is taking place week on week, as the major players attempt to get a grip on the global economic downturn and the ever-encroaching spectre of widespread patent expiries. Since the last Pharm Exec Europe landed in your inboxes, we’ve seen Pfizer consume Wyeth in a $68bn binge and Roche launch a hostile $42bn bid for Genentech. A wave of mooted job cuts has also emerged: GSK could lose between 6000 and 10,000; AstraZeneca is cutting another 6000 on top of the 9000 already announced; and King Pharma is to axe 22% of its workforce. Further, Eli Lilly’s US president Deirdre Connelly has defected to GSK, which has also recruited Rupert Murdoch’s son to the fold in a bid to review “external issues that might have the potential for serious impact upon the group’s business and reputation.” Despite the continued reassurances that pharma is less exposed to the financial crisis than other industries, the upsets seem to be coming nearly as thick and as fast as they have been in banking, building and car manufacturing. The two-times UK Prime Minister Harold Wilson once famously said that a week is a long time in politics, and it now looks like that only slightly tongue-in-cheek observation can be applied to a wealth of sectors, pharma being one of them. It’s the most exciting time in pharma business and politics on record, but not necessarily for the best reasons. Nevertheless, it makes Pharm Exec Europe’s switch from monthly to weekly publication seem more necessary than ever.
