Pharmaceutical Executive Digest Europe - February 11, 2009 - (Page 4) News Swiss group’s US acquisition The pharmaceutical group Helsinn (Switzerland) has acquired the US-based biopharmaceutical company, Sapphire Therapeutics, for an undisclosed amount. The group has appointed Franco Vecchi, a member of Helsinn Holding’s board, as chairman and president of Helsinn Therapeutics (US) Inc. This acquisition will give the Helsinn Group access to anamorelin, a therapy for the treatment of cancer cachexia; ipamorelin, for the IV treatment of post operative ileus (the impairment of bowel motility following surgery, an unmet medical need); and ST-1141, a new oral compound, for the treatment of opioidinduced bowel dysfunction (Phase I). The US operation’s products will be manufactured in Helsinn’s facilities in Switzerland. Riccardo Braglia, CEO of the Helsinn Group, said: “The acquisition of Sapphire Therapeutics will also allow us to expand our current pipeline of products in existing, focused therapeutic areas, in particular in cancer supportive care. This is a major step forward for the growth of Helsinn into the future with the new subsidiary Helsinn Therapeutics (US) Inc.” Pfizer’s fake drug ad not for the squeamish Pfizer has launched a hard-hitting UK cinema ad warning consumers against the dangers of counterfeit drugs. The ad, which presents a graphic scene of a man regurgitating a large dead rat, is intended to educate consumers about the dangerous substances (like rat poison) that can lace counterfeits. A recent survey conducted by the drug giant suggested that as many as 10% of men had purchased prescription-only medicines via unregulated sources such as the internet. The ad campaign, which runs in UK cinemas until 5 March, is the result of a collaboration with the UK MHRA and patient charities. It was devised by healthcare advertising agency Langland at a cost of almost £500,000 ( 533,808).
