Pharmaceutical Executive Digest Europe - February 18, 2009 - (Page 4) News Scottish firm in stem cell deal with Sweden’s Cellartis ITI Life Sciences (Dundee, UK) has granted stem cell company Cellartis AB (Gothenburg, Sweden) a worldwide licence to develop and commercialise specific assets generated from ITI’s £9.5 million ( 13.3 million) Stem Cell Technology (SCT) Programme to academia and industry. ITI launched a programme in January 2007, to develop an automated process for producing large volumes of high-quality, ethically-derived human embryonic (hES) stem cell lines. Cellartis is one of the world’s most advanced stem cell companies and the largest provider of ethically-derived hES lines. It expanded into a new R&D and manufacturing facility in Scotland from Sweden to be part of the ITI programme in 2007. Since then Cellartis has expanded its operations in Dundee and is currently exploring strategic opportunities to further enhance its Scottish connections. Scottish health secretary Nicola Sturgeon commented: “This is a positive development — both for the Scottish economy and for public health. Not only do ITI Scotland’s commercial licence deals create new revenue streams for the economy, but they also help to stimulate growth and create new jobs.“ Strong Swiss franc dampens Roche’s glory In addition to ‘turbulent market forces, Roche’s 2008 earnings were also hit by the negative impact of the strong franc, the company has reported. Roche said last week that sales fell by 1% to SFr 45.62 billion (€30 billion) because of adverse currency factors and the non-recurrence of one-off pandemic sales of the group’s Tamiflu influenza treatment. Net group profits fell 5% to SFr10.84 billion, hit by currencies and lower financial earnings because of falling interest rates. The company has nonetheless forecast that sales in both its pharmaceuticals division and diagnostics side will continue to outperform the market, with group sales expected to rise by about 5%. However, operating profits fell by 28 per cent to SFr1.19 billion because of “acquisitions, greater competition in the US diabetes market and a less favourable portfolio mix.” French cash boost for Cerenis Cerenis Therapeutics (Toulouse, France), a privately held pharmaceutical company, has received a €2.5 million investment to finance ongoing clinical development of its portfolio of HDL-related products for the treatment of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. The funds were granted by OSEO, the French Agency for Innovation. 1 7 NEWS VACCINES 2 11 FROM THE EDITOR / NEWS STRATEGY 5 CALENDAR 6 BRUSSELS REPORT 12 ONLINE NETWORKING 15 ON THE MOVE http://www.waters.com/webassets/other/corp/ba/index.html?test=vid&xcid=9565&vid=test#LifeScience/Pharmaceutical/JeremyDesai/Intro http://www.itilifesciences.com/ http://www.cellartis.com/ http://www.itilifesciences.com/defaultpage131cd0.aspx?pageID=730 http://www.itilifesciences.com/defaultpage131cd0.aspx?pageID=730 http://www.cerenis.com/technology.html http://www.oseo.fr/oseo/oseo_in_english
