Pharmaceutical Executive Digest Europe - February 25, 2009 - (Page 1) News Botanical and plant-derived drugs worth 26 billion by 2013 According to a new report from BCC Research, Botanical and Plant-Derived Drugs Global Markets, the global market for botanical and plant-derived drugs was worth $19.5 billion ( 15.4 billion) in 2008. This is expected to reach $32.9 billion ( 26 billion) in 2013, for a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.0%. The market is broken down into botanical drugs and all other plant-derived drugs. Of these, plantderived drugs have the largest share of the market, and this share is expected to increase to $30.5 billion in 2013, for a CAGR of 9.4%. The botanical drugs sector however is expected to grow at a staggering CAGR of 651.7% to reach $2.4 billion ( 1.9 billion) in 2013. Some of these products may be approved for multiple indications during this time period. BCC Research projects the approved indications to reach a total of 14 by 2013, with oncology being the most prominent therapeutic category, followed by hormone and metabolism as a secondary therapeutic category. For more on these news stories and all the latest breaking pharma news, look at our website www.pharmexeceurope.com 25 February 2009 French cancer treatment shows longer survival rates Transgene (France) has announced additional data from the Phase IIb clinical study of its therapeutic vaccine TG4010 (MVA-MUC1-IL2) as an adjunct to first line chemotherapy in patients with advanced nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The data at 21 months of median follow up is said to confirm a statisticallysignificant 6-month increase in median survival (17.1 months in the experimental arm versus 11.3 months in the control arm) in patients with normal levels of activated Natural Killer cells at baseline. The company plans to have meetings with FDA and EMEA during the second quarter of 2009 in preparation of a Phase III programme in metastatic NSCLC.
