Scientists in Delhi searched the records of global trademark offices and discovered that 5,000 patents had been issued for ‘medical plants and traditional systems.’ “More than 2,000 of these belong to the Indian systems of medicine,” commented Dr Vinod Kumar Gupta, head of the Traditional Knowledge Digital Library, which now lists details of the 200,000 treatments. “We began to ask why multinational companies were spending millions of dollars to patent treatments that so many lobbies in Europe deny work at all.” In Brussels alone, some 285 patents for medicinal plants have already been issued. The database will now be used by the European Patent Office to check against ‘bio-prospectors.’ For more on these news stories and all the latest breaking pharma news, look at our website www.pharmexeceurope.com Online advice centre for regulatory affairs launched Regulatory affairs specialist TRAC Services (UK) has launched an online download centre, providing advice and information on a range of issues concerning the regulatory affairs industry.
