Pharmaceutical Executive Digest Europe - March 4, 2009 - (Page 4) Training and Development If you are one of the unlucky ones that have already been made redundant, you have absolutely nothing to lose. An MBA will boost your skills, and position you better for when those elusive “green shoots” of recovery start to appear. This sort of forward planning may account for continued healthy enrolment at business schools. According to a recent article in the UK Times, although still early in the recruiting cycle for this year, MBA Nice little earner An article in last week’s UK Times stated that the UK the average salary for a male MBA graduate was £74,441 ( 94,540) plus a bonus (or other variable earnings) of £27,179 ( 30712). For women it was £59,309 ( 67,019, with variable earnings of £11,230 ( 12,670) Pharmaceuticals and healthcare was the highest paying sector ( 110,615 average salary, plus 58,372 variable earnings), followed by finance. Here graduates in Germany and the US earned more on than UK graduates average. enquiries and applications are up in the UK. But do pharma companies still want MBA graduates? The traditional roles for MBAs within Big Pharma are in strategic and brand marketing, business development and analysis. While marketing may suffer in a recession, the need for good business development and analysis is stronger than ever — if the researchers can’t fill that empty pipeline then the partnership and licensing guys have to. At the SME end of the industry, where it’s generally all hands to the pump, extending the skill set of key executives is important, even more so in tough times. Tony Taylor of Crawford Scientific, offering analytical services and training in chromatography, says that a key motivation for SME execs considering an MBA would be to understand the facets of business that we have no formal responsibility for, but get drawn into. “For me it’s marketing. I’m the technical director and know nothing about marketing, yet it falls on me”. The problem for SMEs is releasing key staff for 12-months MBA study. This is difficult for many multinational companies, let alone SMEs fighting for survival. 2 FROM THE EDITOR / NEWS 3 11 PHARMA MBAs NEWS 6 BIO-ENTREPRENEUR SCHOOL 8 SALES FORCE EFFECTIVENESS 10 GSK’S PRICE CUTS 13 CALENDAR 14 ON THE MOVE http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/management/article5548386.ece http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/career_and_jobs/article5798063.ece http://www.crawfordscientific.com/ http://www.skila.com
